Many Cameroonians prefer a used vehicle imported from Europe or the United States: more choice, often better equipment and a clear service history. Importing it yourself is possible, but each step has its traps. Here is how it works. General information: duties and rules change, always ask for a current estimate.
1. Choose the right vehicle
Think about the roads you will drive on most: city traffic in Yaoundé or Douala, the rainy season, long trips between regions. Popular choices are robust saloons, 4x4s and pick-ups whose spare parts are easy to find in Cameroon. The age and the engine size of the vehicle also change the duties you will pay.
2. Check its history
Ask for the registration document, the service book and, when possible, a history report. Check the mileage, accident damage and rust. Avoid paying a seller you do not know before the vehicle has been inspected.
3. Shipping to Douala
Vehicles arrive by sea at the port of Douala, in a container or on a roll-on/roll-off ship. Keep the bill of lading and the purchase invoice: they are needed for customs.
4. Customs clearance
Clearance is done through a licensed customs agent. Duties and taxes are calculated on the value, the age and the characteristics of the vehicle. Ask for a full estimate before buying, so the total cost in FCFA does not surprise you.
5. Registration and insurance
Once cleared, the vehicle can be registered and insured in your name. Keep all the documents of the import: you will need them if you sell the car one day.
